Not known for my musical talents, I found myself carried along last night on the crest of a choral wave. At the end of another long but highly stimulating day of discussion, debate and dialogue at the World Assembly, the words of a new piece of music rang especially true. As I sang the lyrics about hope in the requiem penned by my colleague Sylvia Borren from Oxfam Novib, I felt rejuvenated by the energy one gets from joint action, from acting together. The performance has been captured on video, just like our plenaries and some other events. Although we have to beg you for some patience for uploading this particular file you can find footage. The Poverty Requiem is a journey through the reality of poverty, the suffering, loss, abandon and then the hope sung against a drum beat and with the power of hundreds of voices. I cannot wait to hear this piece performed by choirs all over the world on October 17th, Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP)’s big day of mobilisation. Fitting into the Stand Up and Speak Out actions this year, we know already there are singers in New Zealand, Gambia, and Malaysia rehearsing their own interpretation of this powerful piece. Warm regards, Kumi Naidoo.
